Children are like “the bud” in the house

Press , 08-29-2019 06:30

In 31 days from August 6 to September 9, 2019, about 10,000 FPT Telecom's employees participated in the FoxSteps project - walking 13 rounds around the Earth to raise funds to build playgrounds for children across the country. Up to now, FPT Telecom has completed the project 9 days earlier than expected.

Playgrounds for children: Lack of quantity and quality

Lack of children's playgrounds is a situation that has existed for many years in many localities. Where the children can play safe is the concern of many parents.

Particularly in Hanoi, statistics of the Department of Planning and Architecture of Hanoi shows that the city currently has more than 200 flower gardens and public playgrounds, of which, 4 urban districts including Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, Dong Da, and Ba Dinh have nearly 30 flower gardens and public playgrounds, accounting for 1.92% of the total land area, equivalent to 2.08m2 per person.

For example, Thanh Xuan district has 11 wards but until now 100% of the population groups do not have a sports area - a place for children to play; In Ha Dong, Hai Ba Trung and Ba Dinh districts, many wards still do not have sports areas.

Ms. Tran Thanh Thuy, who lives in an apartment building in Thanh Xuan district, said: “The whole building only has a small playground for children. However, in the afternoon, adults come to exercise and occupy the whole area of the children. Therefore, my family mainly let the children come down for a walk and then return. At the weekend I spend time to take my children to the commercial center with playground for them to play”.

In fact, there is a paradox: While a series of skyscrapers and shopping centers, etc. are built, public areas that can be used as playgrounds are narrow down; At the same time, many parks, playgrounds and sidewalks in many urban areas are occupied for blatant business. This led to the phenomenon of public entertainment space for adults and children which were already in short becoming even more deficient. The children are forced to make full use of the roads, corridors, and sidewalks, etc. to play. It is not exaggerating to say that children in the city are "confined", they do not have many conditions for recreation with the development of ages.

The expectations of the people are entrusted to the system of cultural houses built throughout the provinces and cities. However, contrary to the expectation of many people, inadequacies exist, which makes many cultural house unable to become a reliable address for parents to send their children.

Mrs. Le Phuong Anh (residing in Kim Giang Ward, Thanh Xua District) said that the whole neighborhood has only one cultural house, but inside there was a table set up for adult to play table tennis. It is diffcult to have a separate corner for children to read books. Children usually have to play outside in the tight, messy yard.

For example, in Thanh Hoa, although more than 80% of villages have cultural houses but they have not been fully functioned and used due to limitations in equipment, content and operation method. This is also the common situation in many localities across the country.

Building community playgrounds, for the future of children

Lack of playing space is the reason many children have to accept to spend the whole day in the cramped space of the house, watching television or using computers excessively. Therefore, summer vacation which should be a happy and meaningful time suddenly become a boring and cramped period of time for many children. From here, they are accidentally pushed into electronic games, depend on television, and computers, which leads to many other consequences.

The rate of children with autism in Vietnam is increasing, partly because of the lack of a playground. Currently, Vietnam has not had an official study on the number of people with autism, but according to statistics of the Ministry of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs 10 years ago, there were about 200,000 Vietnamese people with autism.

At an event for autistic people in early April 2019, Professor Nguyen Thanh Liem, former director of the Vietnam National Children's Hospital estimated that Vietnam had about 1 million autistic children and 8 million people directly affected by this including the parents and grandparents of the child.

At Vietnam National Children's Hospital, the number of children coming for autism examination and treatment is increasing. The Hospital's Psychiatric Department currently accepts intervention for relatively severe children, children whose parents have not yet mastered the skills to care for people with autism, children in provinces without intervention centers and in remote areas. Parents of most children with mild autism will be counseled and guided by health care workers.

Today, not only in rural areas but also in big cities, many places still do not have a proper playground for children when urbanization is happening too fast. Many corporations, businesses and charities have held competitions and called for funds to build playgrounds for children across the country.

For instance, according to FPT Corporation, from August 6 to September 9, 2019, more than 10,000 FPT Telecom’s employees walked down the street to join the FoxSteps project - conquering 13 rounds around the Earth in 31 days, in order to raise fund to contribute to the construction of 63 playgrounds for children across the country. Each kilometer walked by FPT Telecom’s employees will be converted into VND10,000, contributing to the construction fund of 63 playgrounds for children in 59 provinces and cities.

Chairman Chu Thanh Ha of FPT Telecom said: “The exercing project with Foxstep is one of the typical activities of the Company this year. Not only improving the health of all employees at FPT Telecom, the project is also an opportunity for FPT Telecom to have the opportunity to raise funds to build playgrounds for children across 59 provinces in Vietnam, on a journey for a better life, not only for FPT Telecom’s employees but also for the community”.

By installing the FoxSteps app on mobile phones, FPT Telecom's employees in 59 cities and provinces walked down the street in 31 days. This is a meaningful campaign because every kilometer of FPT Telecom's employees will be converted into VND10,000, contributing to the construction fund of playgrounds for children nationwide.
